Sonic’s Vegan Menu selections are limited for those of us accustomed to seeing plant-based Impossible burgers and Beyond burger options on the menu at many other fast food establishments. Even the veggie burger from Sonic Drive-In is not vegan. What’s the deal? Fortunately, you do have a variety of tasty summery drinks, slushes, and sides to pick from. At least Sonic offers vegan cuisine options that you can rely on. If you want any form of stomach gratification, you must get the French fries and tater tots. The kids’ menu consists primarily of a bun with vegetables, tots, fries, an applesauce, and a drink.

It was a real hardship for us to come up with the best vegan options for Sonic. The following list of three tasty dishes may not quite fill you up, but they might work for those in a pinch. Which one do you find most appealing?
- Zesty Salad – Request a container filled to the brim with lettuce, onion, tomato, both types of peppers, avocado, and lemon juice on the side. To prepare a salad dressing, combine the avocado and juice. Add pepper and celery salt.
- Sweet-tart dessert – Request a cup (or more!) full of sliced bananas with lemon and limes on the side for the sweet-tart dessert. Squeeze the citrus pieces onto the bananas to experience the acidic tart flavor alongside the sweet banana fruit. Apple slices or applesauce, if available, could also work.
- Simple Drink – Request a hot or iced tea (or water) with lemon or lime on the side. Simple and revitalizing.

- They employ liquid margarine, fryer shortening, and bun oil, all of which are unintentionally vegan.
- Applesauce is the only vegan dessert offered at Sonic. Apple slices are offered in some places.
- Remember that the NERDS candy addition is not vegan. Only the grape flavor is vegan-friendly (produced without carmine, a color derived from insects), and this flavor is not offered at Sonic locations.
